Extensions of Electromagnetic Field Theory
Validity of gauge groups higher than U(1)
The pursuit of these ideas began with the work of Alexandre Proca where he introduced a way to non-trivially include a mass term in the Lagragnian for the Maxwell field. The modern interpretation in gauge theory of the Proca field is concerned with the massive vector bosons of electroweak symmetries [W+,W-, and Z0]. See my paper.
Classical Optics
Partial Coherence and Phase Singularities (Singular Optics)
The classical wave(field) nature of light is mysterious. As a fundamental vibration in the terahertz range, it occupies a very tiny segment of the electromagnetic spectrum, but ironically is one of the most heavily researched (e.g. lasers, electro-optics, etc). My motivation for studying these topics and their correlation to other phenomena in physics was motivated by the research of Greg Gbur at UNC Charlotte.
